I started my sourdough baking journey just before the pandemic. After visiting the famous Boudin Bakery in San Francisco in October 2019 - the home of the oldest sourdough starter in the USA (established 1849), I was inspired to try sourdough baking at home. After searching for the oldest starter I could find, I stumbled across my 107 year old French organic rye sourdough starter sourced from the family who created and nurtured this starter across several generations out of necessity during WWI.
Little did I know we were heading into endless lock downs. Like many, I had a lot of time on my hands and baking gave me something positive and productive to do. Baking also calmed my anxiety during this uncertain time.
As I learned how to nurture my starter and bake sourdough at home, I needed a place to document what I learned; and also to inspire other home bakers who may have purchased one of my starters.
Since then, I continue nurturing Mojo Risin - my starter, named after The Doors song LA Women - feeding with 100% Australian rye flour. Although l’m crazy busy, I continue to bake as often as life allows and help others start their sourdough baking journey.
Why Rock n Roll Sourdough?
I’m a multi-instrumentalist (guitars, drums, percussion and vocals) and have performed in many bands over the years so it seemed fitting to name my blog and my starter after my first passion.
If you’re starting out, or looking for baking tips and recipes, I hope my blog inspires and helps you on your sourdough baking journey.
Happy baking!
Jules.
